The Sheboygan Fire Department is celebrating Fire Prevention Week by reminding residents of some important safety tips.
The theme of this year’s Fre Prevention Week, organized by the National Fire Protection Association, is “Smoke Alarms, Make Them Work For You”.
The NFPA says that working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by 54%, while three out of every five deaths in fires happen in homes that either have no smoke alarms or where the alarms are not in working order.
The Sheboygan Fire Department encourages everyone to make sure an alarm is installed in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on each level of all homes.
Citizens should also ensure they test the alarms once a month and replace the batteries if they are not working.
Also, all smoke alarms should be replaced after ten years of use.
