The Manitowoc Lutheran Lancer Girls Volleyball Team hosts the Zephyrs of St. Mary Catholic tonight with the Big East Red Division Title on the line.
Both teams are 5 and 0 in the Division, and Lancers Head Coach Lacey Behnke tells Seehafer Sports that this is the match they’ve been pointing to all year.
“It’s worked out with the schedule that each of the previous two matches has been played at the end of the year with the conference title on the line. We lost them both, so the kids are excited to play this match and turn the tide tonight.”
The Zephyrs are 17 and 6 overall, while the Lancers, riding an eight-match winning streak into tonight, have an overall record of 25 and 6.
They are also ranked second in the wissports.net Division Four coaches’ poll, having played a demanding schedule to prepare them, says Behnke, for moments like tonight.
“It’s not the in-season prep that always makes you who you are but what you do when no one’s looking that makes you a champion. We call it training in the dark.”
Behnke adds, “The kids have taken this philosophy to heart, and it’s a big reason we are in the position to play for a conference title.”
The Lancers Head Coach says St. Mary Catholic always comes prepared and ready to play, adding that the team has a lot of athleticism, especially among its outside hitters and blockers.
Behnke says they (The Lancers) must serve well to win.
” My two outside (hitters) are tough to beat when they get the ball. By also getting the middles(hitters) involved, it spreads out opposing defenses and makes them choose who they will defend.”
Behnke adds that playing this match in front of Lancer Nation is enormous.
“It’s exciting that we are playing this match in front of Lancer Nation. They have been nothing short of amazing in supporting us, home or away all year long.”
Match time is 7 p.m.
