End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin has released its End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin Homicide Report for 2023.
In total, there were 66 cases around the state last year where a domestic violence incident resulted in a homicide.
Some of those cases did result in multiple deaths, such as a murder/suicide.
In fact, 54 people were victims of a domestic violence homicide, 31 perpetrators died as a direct result of the incident, and 24 additional family members died from violence.
This means 109 people in total died last year in domestic violence-related incidents in Wisconsin.
Comparing those numbers to 2022, a total of 106 people were killed in domestic violence incidents, with 96 of them being the victim and the perpetrator.
Milwaukee County had the highest number of incidents by far, with 28 being reported there, while Racine County reported seven domestic violence homicides.
Dane County had the third highest number with five, while Outagamie County had three, and Sheboygan, Brown, and Winnebago Counties each had two.
Manitowoc, Fond du Lac, Calumet, Kewaunee, and Door Counties had none.
While the overwhelming number of victims were women, there were also a significant number of men who were killed by spouses, a romantic rival, or a former boyfriend.
Racially, the majority of domestic violence homicides were committed by black and white individuals, with 51 such incidents.
Members of the Latinx, Native American, and unknown race categories committed eight.
