A local veteran was honored at Sunday’s Packer game.
George Gosz, a Rockwood native, was joined by his family on the field prior to kickoff as a part of Operation Fan Mail.
Gosz was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1957 and took part in the atomic nuclear tests known as the Desert Rock exercises.
As a part of the exercises, Gosz and his platoon were ordered to march to the drop site of a bomb that generated a mushroom cloud larger than the one that resulted from the bombing of Hiroshima.
His platoon slept on the burned-out ground of the drop site and developed prostate cancer 25 years later as a result of the radiation exposure.
He now lives in Manitowoc with his wife Nancy, who joined him on the field along with his daughter Tami and his grandsons, Wyatt and Walker.
