The people of northeast Wisconsin showed that they are willing to help others in times of need.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest Program that they, along with numerous other law enforcement agencies through the Police Lights of Christmas, asked residents to donate goods for those affected by Hurricane Helene.
Police accepted items like paper towels, diapers, trash bags, and nonperishable food items with the initial goal of sending one semi-truck to North Carolina to provide those needs.
However, Hartwig says:
“But with the amount of exposure they ended up getting, they ended up sending nine semi-truck loads down to North Carolina to help the Ashville Police Department down there,” he explained. “So, it was great to be a part of that.”
Hartwig continues by saying that the outpouring from the community was amazing.
He also says residents were very happy the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office was doing this because scammers can try to profit from tragedies.
Police Lights of Christmas is an organization made up of police and sheriff’s departments across the state to help give resources to low-income families.
Manitowoc, Two Rivers, Kiel, Brillion, and the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department are all part of the organization.
