Doubles flights from Manitowoc Lincoln and Roncalli/Two Rivers advance to the second round in the Division One bracket of The WIAA State Girls Individual Tennis Championships in Madison on Thursday afternoon.
Senior Zylia Kleinfeldt and junior Taylor Peterson of Lincoln defeated Nora Lonergan and Ellie Kortendick of Oak Creek 6-1,6-0.
In contrast, senior Madison Lamers and her sister, Sophomore Megan Lamers of Roncalli/Two Rivers, posted a 6-3,6-0 victory over seniors Taylor Pressler and Ally Quaschnick from Eau Claire North to move on to round two Friday morning.
Ships Head Coach Stephanie Henschel told Seehafer Sports that this could have been Taylor and Zylia’s best match all year.
“They served well. I don’t think they had many double faults at all. Their returns were good. They hustled all match and did their best to win.”
Madison and Megan’s mother, head Coach Kristin Lamers, told us they came out strong from the outset of their match.
“They started strong, and I told them to keep their feet on the pedal and keep it going.” She added—
“They needed to be aggressive at the net and hit the ball with a little more spin, but not necessarily power. They did that and executed the game plan to eventual victory.”
Junior Jordin Popp fell short in her opening round singles match to senior Mia Miller of Notre Dame (Green Bay) 6-1,6-4. Henschel says sometimes you must give credit to your opponent.
“She did a fantastic job. You want to go out playing your best match, and Jordin played well. However, Mia (Miller) played a great match to win and advance.”
Jordin finishes her junior season with a record of 21 and 7.
Meanwhile, Zylia and Taylor will take to the court at 9 a.m. Friday morning, with Madison and Megan following shortly after at 10 a.m.
