Cities around Wisconsin, including Manitowoc, are getting shared revenue from the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.
Mayor Justin Nickels said on WOMT’s Be My Guest Program that Manitowoc usually gets about $5 million a year, but according to the state Department of Revenue, the city will get about $7.3 million within the next year.
Nickels says the aid is very helpful, especially since it is now tied to the state sales tax.
“One penny of the state sales tax goes toward funding the state shared revenue program,” Nickels described. “So, in good times when people are spending more and buying more, we’ll see more shared revenue which is very positive for municipalities.”
The mayor said years before, the shared revenue was stagnant and didn’t keep up with before.
However, with inflation and other costs, the city will have to figure out how to balance everything.
Every town, village, and city around Manitowoc County will receive some shared revenue, including the City of Two Rivers, which will receive about $4.9 million, and the City of Kiel, which will receive about $672,000.
