U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin is calling for federal assistance for chicken farmers impacted by the closure of Pure Prairie Poultry.
In a letter to the USDA, the Wisconsin Democrat urged the agency to explore options to help farmers left caring for tens of thousands of chickens after the company abruptly shut down.
Baldwin is seeking both financial relief and potential new legislation to address what she describes as a “farmgate emergency.”
The closure has left farmers in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa responsible for over 100,000 unwanted chickens.
