Wisconsin voters will have access to significantly fewer ballot drop boxes in the 2024 election.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission reports just 78 drop boxes in 42 communities, a sharp decline from the over 500 boxes available in more than 400 locations during the previous presidential election.
The state’s Supreme Court ruled over the summer that while state law neither explicitly allows nor prohibits the use of ballot drop boxes, some conservative areas have chosen to ban them.
Despite this, larger cities like Madison and Milwaukee are continuing their use.
The Elections Commission has not speculated on the reasons for the reduced number of boxes this year.
