The mayor of Manitowoc is giving a preview of the 2025 budget.
Justin Nickels explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that a part of the budget will be an aggressive road project plan that would go on for the next six years.
“About $35 million invested in roads,” Nickels explained. “Pretty aggressive from what we have been doing, but just the way our finances have been set up over the years and working aggressively to manage the budget well we should be able to do it very fiscally responsibly.”
Nickels does call it a Catch-22 because he’s been working to get the city out of debt, but roads are getting expensive.
He talked about the most recent Franklin Street project.
“Five blocks, which is very nice, but it was $1.4 million just for those five blocks,” he said.
He also explained that while residents are paying a wheel tax, the city is only getting about $450,000 in revenue.
Nickels says while the plan is aggressive, it will be sensible.
The full 2025 Manitowoc budget presentation will be at tonight’s Common Council meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m.
