Ever since Elijah Vue was reported missing the morning of February 20th, Manitowoc County and the rest of Wisconsin had their eyes firmly on the case.
Hundreds if not thousands of volunteers helped in the search efforts, and internet sleuths began digging into the past of Elijah’s mother, Katrina Baur, and the man who was taking care of him, Jesse Vang.
Both were apprehended shortly after the case began, leading to many rumors. Nearly seven months after he was reported missing, the remains of Elijah were found in the Town of Two Rivers.
This major turning point in the case has led to more speculation and swirling rumors.
Here is what we know as fact, thanks to court records and police reports.
Vang is confirmed as being the last person to have seen Elijah alive.
He initially told police that he had taken a nap and awoke to find the would-be 4-year-old missing.
Katrina admitted to bringing her son to Vang’s Two Rivers home so he could teach him “how to be a man”, while Vang admitted to punishing him, including withholding food, and threatening him with cold showers.
Since Elijah’s remains were found, Baur and Vang have had their previous court cases dropped and new charges filed.
Baur has been charged with Chronic Neglect of a Child Consequence is Death, Neglecting a Child Under 6 Years Old, and two counts of Resisting or Obstructing an Officer and contrary to rumors, is alive and is being held in the Manitowoc County Jail on a $400,000 cash bond.
Vang is charged with Physical Abuse of a Child Repeated Acts Causing Death, Hiding a Corpse, and Resisting or Obstructing an Officer, each with repeater modifiers, and is also being held in the Manitowoc County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond.
Vang is due for a preliminary hearing on November 6th, which is when the court will determine if there is sufficient evidence to take the case to trial.
Baur, meanwhile, is not due back in court until December for further proceedings.
