Manitowoc Lutheran’s cross-country program has grown “leaps and bounds” under the leadership of Head Coach Abbey Bubolz.
The Lancer boys are headed back to the state meet at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids after finishing second, behind Valders, at last Saturday’s Division Three Sectional meet at Meadow Links Golf Course in Manitowoc.
It’s the Lancers’ first trip since 2020, and Bubolz tells Seehafer Sports her kids have overcome plenty of adversity to get here.
“They’ve had to work through injuries and illness to get here. To persevere through it all is amazing, and we are excited to go (to state) and keep running.”
Senior Joe Ungemach broke his foot over the summer, nearly finishing his season before it began.
“The seniors have been looking forward to this day for a long time. We’ve been trying to use our gifts to the best of our ability, and sometimes it doesn’t work out.” Ungemach adds—
“It’s very satisfying when it all comes together and realize a dream come true running at the state meet.”
Senior Braden Revak is realizing a dream come true on Saturday.
“I went to the state meet during my sophomore year to watch Jacob (Kanzenbach) run, and it was a great atmosphere.
I wish I could have stayed there longer, and from then on, I made it my goal to run here. Amazingly, my dreams have played out and come true.”
Senior Ryder Vogt finished runner-up to Ben Beck of Iola Scandinavia last Saturday. He says ‘Lancer Nation” has been terrific” in throwing their support behind them.
“I feel that cross country can be a bit overlooked. This year, it’s been different with all the support from teachers, the student body, and the community. It motivates you to do your best.”
There are no guarantees, even when you’ve done your very best, but Bubolz says their faith has seen them through many “ups and downs” throughout the year, reminding them of that before each meet.
“You just go out there and use the gifts you’ve been given to the best of your ability to glorify God on this day, no matter the outcome, and if you do that, you’ve had a successful day.”
The Lancers run at 2 p.m.
