There will be a new water main replacement project between the city and town of Manitowoc, plus the town of Newton.
The Manitowoc Common Council unanimously approved the municipal water main installation bids during a special council meeting on Wednesday night (November 6th).
The water mains will be installed on some owners’ properties and wells that are affected by the former Newton Gravel Pit site.
According to their agreement, the city will coordinate the work at the property to minimize the delay and disruption of normal activities and prevent damage to properties.
Eight installations will take place, according to city documents.
The Newton Gravel Pit is an area in the 1960s and 70s that was a place for the historic dumping of chlorinated solvents.
In late 2013, the solvents were found in water samples collected from three wells in an area on Hecker Road and Silver Creek Road southeast of the Gravel Pit had chloride concentrations exceeding DNR drinking water standards.
The weather could determine when the projects will get started.
