The Sheriff’s Office in Calumet County is warning residents of scams going around social media.
The scams are often found on Facebook but are common everywhere.
These social media posts, often made in buy or sell groups, will be for “missing people” with the comments turned off.
The posts will ask to be shared to get the word out, and then days later, the post will be changed to promote a product or rental property with a link to the scam.
By sharing these posts, one is often unknowingly spreading a thoughtful message, only to be the subject of scammers days later.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office has offered tips on picking out such scams.
They include the mentioning of a Silver Alert for someone who isn’t old, the post is not from a known source such as law enforcement or missing persons groups, and they will have no phone number or contact information.
