Funding is still needed for a new animal shelter.
Lakeshore Humane Society Executive Director Tina Nichols explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that fundraising has been good so far, but more money still needs to be raised.
So far, about $2.3 million has been donated toward the new shelter, which started with a $1.5 million donation from a local couple.
However, Nichols says the shelter is looking for about $3.5 to $3.9 million for everything they would need for the new building.
“I know many people have asked that seems excessive in costs,” she described. “But everything is expensive right now. And people have to look at the fact that we are similar to a clinic, a doctor’s office where we have tons of drains and different things throughout the building.”
She also says the money raised will not go toward unnecessary expenses in the new building.
“We’re not doing anything like vaulted ceilings and big mirrors,” she explained. “It’s going to be a nice building. It’s going to be amazing for the animals and for the people that work there. But it’s functional.”
Nichols says ground for the project should be broken next Spring and by this time next year, the new humane society should be open.
She explained before that the current Lakeshore Humane Society building is outdated as needs many repairs.
The new shelter would include new rooms including a medical suite and a surgical room, to allow for the spaying and neutering of animals on-site.
