The Manitowoc Public School District wants to build a new playground for one of the schools.
The project is called The Dream Playground and would include a new, more all-inclusive playground for students with disabilities at the Riverview Education Center.
MPSD Interim Superintendent Lee Thennes (Tennis) explained on the WCUB Breakfast Club that the group that wants the new playground will be raising about $800,000.
Along with elementary students, the school teaches the district’s kids with special needs.
According to Interventionist Abby Brixius, the playground they have now is too small for many kids and is impossible for students in wheelchairs.
It can also be very difficult for students with other disabilities to play.
“Part of the vision of this is that with this new playground equipment it will fully include all of the students to be able to play together,” Thenness explained. “Not have to have specialized equipment set aside somewhere else.”
Brixius also told the Manitowoc Public School Board that they will raise money for the new playground through grants and donations.
A preliminary drawing shows a playground area with longer ramps for people in wheelchairs and equipment for all children to play on.
The MPSD Board unanimously approved moving the project forward so an account can be created for the money raised.
