The City of Two Rivers is working on “gettin’ the lead out” of its water system.
Mammoth Construction has already begun the process of replacing 300 lead and galvanized water services in the north-central area of the city and so far has specifically concentrated on 32nd, 33rd, 34th, Tannery, and Adams Streets.
In total, the project is estimated to cost $3.9 million, with funding coming from the city and county’s federal ARPA funds, the state’s Safe Drinking Water Fund, and some charges to property owners.
The project will continue into next year, with the city also slated to bid out more contracts for 2025-2026 for an area on the city’s east side.
After this contract is completed, Two Rivers will still have about 1,500 lead water services in its water system out of about 5,100 total services.
The project is also mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency, which finalized a long-expected rule which requires the replacement of all lead in municipal water systems within the next decade.
