Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) is alerting the public that people may be impersonating them as part of a scam.
These scams have individuals posing as WPS employees attempting to receive payments and can happen over the phone, online, and in person.
Phone scammers may manipulate caller IDs to display “WPS” and will threaten to turn off power without payment.
Online scams may appear in search engines with official-looking websites with numbers to call. In these instances, victims have had scammers attempt to get credit card information and Social Security numbers.
In-person scams tend to involve scammers impersonating a WPS employee and going door to door.
If you experience this, it is recommended that you ask the individual for identification to confirm that they work for WPS.
If you believe a scammer is targeting you, you are encouraged to call WPS at 800-450-7260.
WPS has also said that if you have fallen victim to one of these scams, contact local law enforcement.
