The City of Manitowoc is working on getting bids for the former Mirro Property.
Mayor Justin Nickels announced that once they hire a company, the goal is to begin work next month.
This includes demolishing a remaining concrete slab, excavating PCB and VOC soils, and removing the utility tunnel below the surface.
The money for the work comes from the city’s almost $2 million federal grant.
The site’s future would be a 59-unit workforce housing project, including market-rate apartments.
Nickels says preparing the site was one of the most significant hurdles, but now the city can reapply for tax credits needed to get the project up and running.
Tax credits would be applied for in March 2025 and awarded in May.
The work would be done on the Washington Street side of the property.
