The City of Sheboygan has provided an update on its network breach after new details emerged online.
The City’s Communications Specialist, Veronica Valdez, shared a statement over the weekend after a ransomware group claimed to be behind the cyber-attack, stating they stole 200 gigabytes worth of data from the network.
Chort Ransomware is the group believed to be behind the data breach.
According to WatchGuard Cybersecurity, Sheboygan is not the only entity Chort has targeted in recent weeks.
Since the start of October, they have stolen data from U.S. universities, school systems, and even an agency within the Kuwait government.
Valdez’s statement over the weekend informed residents that in their post online, no data or files were shared publicly; however, a screenshot displayed a list of archive files obtained by Chort.
As previously stated by the city, there is also no evidence showing any sensitive data was obtained by the ransomware company.
Currently, Sheboygan is monitoring the situation closely and working with cybersecurity specialists to safeguard its systems and data.
