The City of Fond du Lac Fire Rescue has started a program to raise holiday fire awareness.
The “Keep the Wreath Green” program runs from Thanksgiving through January 1st.
Outside the city’s three fire stations, wreaths will be adorned with green Christmas lights.
Anytime a fire is reported in the city, a bulb will be removed and replaced with a red bulb.
These will serve as a reminder to be fire-safe during the holidays.
Fond du Lac Fire Rescue notes that many fires occur around this time of year and have also offered tips to keep your family and home safe.
It is recommended to use power strips with surge protectors and to always unplug lights, wax warmers, trees, and space heaters.
If you have a real Christmas tree up, make sure to keep it watered constantly and away from candles, fireplaces, and other combustibles.
An extensive list of more fire-safe tips during the holiday season can be found online on the Fond du Lac Fire Rescue Facebook page.
