The conceptual plan for Sheboygan’s Fountain Park revitalization has been approved, but not without pushback.
The Sheboygan Common Council met on Monday (December 2nd) and the conceptual plan was one of their most heavily discussed items.
The approval came on a 6-3 vote following questions and concerns being raised by Mayor Ryan Sorenson and other council members.
While essentially all council members agree that Fountain Park is in dire need of improvements, votes not in favor were given due to items such as uncertainty on the total cost, lack of coordination with other city projects, and the necessity of certain items within the plan.
Joe Kerlin, Sheboygan Superintendent of Parks and Forestry, was present at the meeting and explained that this plan is based on public opinion and merely just a concept, meaning not everything in the plan is a guarantee.
He also said that now that the plan has been approved, the schematic phase of the revitalization project will truly determine the total cost while also allowing the council to remove any design aspects they don’t approve of.
