ReadyWisconsin is devoted to making sure that Christmas is as jolly as can be.
Wisconsin Emergency Administrator Greg Engle said, “The best way to enjoy peace of mind during the holidays is to remember safety comes first.”
Fire departments across the country responded to an average of 835 home fires that began with decorations, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
ReadyWisconsin encourages those with live Christmas trees to water them regularly, and for those looking for artificial trees, keep an eye out for the “Fire Resistant” label.
Trees should be placed at least three feet away from heat sources, such as a heater or fireplace, and candles should never be left unattended.
When stringing lights, it is suggested that you never string together more than three sets of incandescent lights and never overload electrical outlets.
While decorating high areas of your home, be sure to use a sturdy ladder, wear shoes that allow for good traction, clear pathways of trip hazards, and fix uneven walkways and steps inside and outside the home to help prevent falls.
