The City of Two Rivers is sticking with its decision to stay out of a PFAS Lawsuit.
The City Council voted 6-1 to opt out of the lawsuit after a judge in South Carolina overseeing the case ruled that municipalities that got out before could have more time to opt back in if they wanted.
Attorney Shawn Riley, who works for the city, explained to the council that if they wanted to opt back in, there could be some benefits for the city, but at the same time, there could be a lot of litigation.
City Manager Greg Buckley said the council didn’t see the need to get back in.
The city manager stated, “I think it’s fair to say that the council’s feeling that the stated settlement award from the 40 to $60,000 range was insufficient to surrender any right to initiate or participate in future ligation.”
Companies like 3M, Tyco, and BSAF have settled lawsuits after PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, were found in city drinking water around the U.S.
Two Rivers also decided to opt out of the 3M lawsuit earlier this year.
