The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging snowmobilers to get prepared for the winter season.
The DNR also asks to keep education and safety at the forefront of these preparations.
A major aspect of snowmobile safety is staying up to date with the ice conditions, which are rapidly changing in the early and late parts of winter.
To this point, Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, DNR off-highway vehicle administrator,r said, “On a sunny day, ice that may have been thick enough to drive on in the morning may be unsafe by the afternoon, especially during the early part of the season.”
This does not apply to just snowmobilers but those using ATVs and UTVs as well. Last year in Wisconsin, several ATVs and UTVs went through the ice, and two such incidents resulted in fatalities.
Additionally, the DNR also encourages all snowmobilers to take a safety education class ahead of the season.
