A local Elks Lodge is giving back to the veteran community.
Tim Ahrens, the Exalted Ruler of Lodge #687 in Manitowoc tells SeehaferNews.com that during their Elktoberfest celebration, the lodge collected $300 in grocery gift cards, and donated them to the Cleveland Veterans Clinic to help struggling veterans.
The Lodge also donated $350 to AMVETS Post 99 as they work on constructing a new building.
Ahrens tells SeehaferNews.com that helping veterans has been a focus of the organization since 1918, when President Woodrow Wilson gave the declaration of war against Germany.
At that time the Elks appropriated a sum of one million dollars to be known as “The War Relief Fund”.
Ahrens said, “Our support for veterans has never stopped. So long as there are Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.”
This is the latest philanthropic effort conducted by Lodge #687, as they donated $350 to Disabled American Veterans and $1,100 to the Lakeshore Humane Society in late October.
