Lakeland University will be adding a new sports program next school year.
The university has announced that beginning in 2026, they will be adding a women’s flag football program.
Women’s flag football will be Lakeland’s 24th sports offering and will run from February through May, starting in 2026.
They will play 7 on 7 in four 12-minute quarters on an 80-yard field.
Women’s flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation and will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
According to the National Federation of State High School Association, over 22,000 girls are playing in high school and nine sanctioned championship states for high school girl’s flag football.
In the announcement, Lakeland President Beth Borgen said, “We were proud to be the first in the state to launch women’s wrestling and that spirit of innovation, a Lakeland hallmark, continues with the addition of women’s flag football.”
Lakeland University joins Marian University after they announced in November that they are adding women’s flag football next school year as well.
