Two politicians have taken different sides after some funding was approved for improvements to Wisconsin buildings.
According to Governor Tony Evers, the Wisconsin State Building Commission approved about $81.5 million in key projects like the rehabilitation of the Charles Robinson House at the Wade House Historic Site in Sheboygan County and the renovation of the UW-Green Bay Studio Art Center.
However, about $71 million was delayed for other projects, including improvements to the UW-Madison Engineering building.
Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader and 9th District State Senator Devin LeMahieu explained that the funding was delayed because the university is “plagued by a lack of accountability and transparency.”
LeMahieu continues by saying, “The UW’s unwillingness, or inability, to answer questions (about the project) has now imperiled the approval of the engineering building. He finishes by saying he hopes UW officials will move forward with transparency and candor.”
Governor Evers said of the delay, “I am deeply disappointed that Republican lawmakers are once again pulling the rug out from under UW in the eleventh hour and putting politics ahead of doing what’s best for our kids, our workforce and economy, and our state. We have to make sure our UW System remains the gem of our state and has the means and resources they need to compete—our students, workforce, and employers, and the future of our communities and state depend upon it.”
The next vote on the project won’t be until January.
