Joseph “Joe” John Powalish, 84, of Manitowoc, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2024 at St. Mary’s Home Felician Village.
Joe was born on May 16, 1940 in Manitowoc to the late Stanley and Othelia (Matysik) Powalish. He attended schools in Manitowoc, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1958. He served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Germany from 1959 – 1962, when he was honorably discharged. He then furthered his education at UW-Milwaukee, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Joe was employed at Manitowoc Ship Building, Rexnard in Milwaukee, and the Foley Company in Manitowoc until his retirement. Joe enjoyed gardening, going to the casino, traveling, bicycling, and playing in the men’s dart ball and softball league.
Joe is survived by his special friend of 49 years, Lynn Wagner, Manitowoc; three sisters: Mary Jane Koppa, Manitowoc, Joan Koppa, Manitowoc, and Doris Pupka, Menomonee Falls; many nieces, nephews, and great-great nephew: Jason Burnett Jr., Manitowoc. Joe was preceded in death by his parents: Stanley and Othelia Powalish; and three brothers-in-law: Frank Koppa, Daniel Koppa, and Frank Pupka.
A funeral service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, 928 S. 14th Street, with Deacon Al Boeldt officiating. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at the funeral home from 9:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery with military honors.
