With the New Year comes a new legislative session.
Senator Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg was once again selected to be the Senate Majority Leader for this next year, and he is very excited for what is ahead.
Sen. LeMahieu’s work for the next session began shortly after the election, as he explained on WOMT’S Be My Guest.
“My first task as Majority Leader was getting things ready to go for the next session,” he explained. “So I met with my Republican colleagues in the Senate to see what committees they might want to chair and what committees they want to be on.”
The 9th District Senator released the full committee assignment list last week.
The Senate Inauguration is set to be held on January 6th, and Sen. LeMahieu says it is always a fun experience, especially for newly elected Senators.
But then, it’s time to get to work.
“The most important thing we do every session is a budget,” he said. “The Governor will introduce his budget at some point in February. We have been working with him on a date for the State of the State Address and a Budget Address.”
The legislature is looking at a projected surplus of over $4 billion, and Sen. LeMahieu says his goal is to give that back to the citizens of Wisconsin in the form of tax cuts.
He also noted that the budget takes a long time to get done because it is a 107-page document that must be read and understood in its entirety.
