As 2024 ends and the new year begins, Sheboygan’s Mayor took some time to reflect upon the past year.
Mayor Ryan Sorenson saw 2024 as year of wins for the city and Sheboygan residents, with numerous positive developments happening over the past 12 months.
“From housing to events to streamlining processes in City Hall, I think these are a lot of the great things we’re seeing in Sheboygan,” he reflected.“Building those relationships with a lot of our business partners, construction folks, developers, and housing investors.”
Mayor Sorenson pointed to housing developments such as View 14 and the Berkshire Apartments as steps forward in addressing the City’s housing Shortage.
However, he said the work is not done with additional housing projects coming this year including the Jakum Hall Apartments and developing housing at the former Memorial Hospital site.
The mayor also said that bringing in special events, such as signing a contract with an organization like the P1 Powerboat races, was an example of Sheboygan’s economic achievements last year.
Looking ahead to 2025, Mayor Sorenson also said there is always room for improvement to keep Sheboygan moving forward.
He said the big questions on his mind are, “How do we bring city government into the 21st century? How do we modernize our processes? How do we modernize technology, and how do we ensure we’re doing thorough risk assessments as well?”
As 2024 came to an end, Sorenson and the Common Council were already working on those improvements.
They approved nearly half a million dollars in funding to better equip and upgrade the City’s IT Department.
2025 is also an election year, and Mayor Sorenson will be running for reelection in the spring.
As of now, his lone challenger is Alder John Belanger, who currently represents Wards three and four in the city.
