The Manitowoc County Health Department wants to ensure residents are testing for radon gas.
January is National Radon Action Month, and it is a time for everyone to learn more about how the naturally occurring radioactive gas can enter homes and buildings through the foundation.
The health department explains that exposure to radon gas is one of the major contributors to lung cancer nationally and causes 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year among non-smokers. 962 of those deaths are in Wisconsin.
About one out of every ten homes in Wisconsin has high radon levels and the only way to find out your home is one of them is to test for it.
Short-term radon test kits are available from the Manitowoc County Health Department for $7.00.
Anyone can stop by the department’s office on S. 9th Street or call 920-683-4155.
