Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has made its way into Manitowoc County.
The Manitowoc County Fish and Game was informed by the Wisconsin DNR that the virus was been identified in a Manitowoc County deer for the first time.
The test result is from a wild 1-year-old buck harvested on November 23rd on private property.
The deer was harvested within 10 miles of both Calumet and Sheboygan Counties.
This means there will be a new baiting and feeding ban in Manitowoc, even though the county has a local ordinance restricting baiting and feeding.
More information about the first case of Chronic Wasting Disease will be discussed at the Manitowoc County Fish and Game January 30th meeting at City Limits in Manitowoc.
CWD is a fatal neurological disorder that causes abnormal proteins called prions. It leads to brain damage, resulting in severe weight loss, behavioral changes, and eventually death.
The disease is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments.
The disease has not spread to humans and there is no known cure.
