Pretty much everyone that I know does it on a daily basis. Some more than others, actually. Some go about it with unexpected flair, while some do it with the unsophisticated approach of a wayward kindergartner. Then, there are others that go about it in such a way that one has to wonder if they’re even human. I’m referring to eating, of course, as well as the foodstuffs that get delivered into the mouths of those that consume.
There’s really nothing to be ashamed of. I mean we ALL do it—we all need to eat to survive, right? Food is the fuel that propels us from one task to the next, hopefully in a manner that’s agreeable and somewhat delicious. However, we all put various foods into our mouths with such frequency that it’s likely that a majority of us, to a certain degree anyhow, stop paying attention to the flavors that are dancing about our tongues. Chomping on a buttered piece of toast has become almost as reflexive and unnoticed as breathing. The act has become so commonplace that tasting truthfully has almost become dismissible.
But, not for everyone. And these are the people to which we’re calling out. We’re looking for the Super Tasters who have absolutely no doubt that they can, while blindfolded, distinguish the difference between a turnip and a radish, between balsamic and apple cider vinegar, between tortilla chips and pita snacks. Between, dare I say, cheddar and Colby cheese. And for these Taste Bud Warriors, we have but one question: Just how smart is your mouth?
The time has come to use your mouths to do more than to form words to describe what an awesome sense of taste you have. The time has come to prove that these words carry weight. On Thursday, January 30, from 6-8 PM, Manitowoc Public Library and PetSkull Brewing Co. are partnering-up to present Face the Flavor After Dark, an Adults-Only (21-years-old and older) gustatory competition.
All the action takes place at PetSkull, 1015 Buffalo Street in Manitowoc. This blind taste testing competition is Single Elimination and can have but a Single Champion. Unlike the “Brew ‘N Bee” spelling bee for adults, no “Cheats” will be available for purchase to keep participants in the mix. So, one incorrect identification and you’re out! There shall be no Do-Overs, No Second Chances this evening! Step up, Flavor-Driven Tough Guys and Gals! Put those tongues on the line, figuratively-speaking. Show us what you got!
And should you emerge victorious, you will be richly rewarded with a $25 gift certificate courtesy of PetSkull! Since various foods will be present, please be sure to answer the required question about allergies when you sign-up to compete. Registration is required to become a contestant during “Face the Flavor: After Dark,” but there is no participation fee.
