Senator Tammy Baldwin and other representatives have introduced a bill to boost transparency in prescription drug advertising.
The Drug-price Transparency for Consumers Act, if passed, would require price disclosures on advertisements for different prescription drugs.
This bill aims to empower patients and reduce the extreme spending done by Americans on medications.
According to Senator Baldwin, the pharmaceutical industry spends $6 billion on direct-to-consumer drug advertisements every year.
About the Act, Baldwin said, “Big drug companies spend billions of dollars on advertising, and it takes patients paying high prices to pay for it. These ads often push patients to the most expensive drugs, not the most effective ones, and patients deserve some transparency.”
Due to the adverse effects prescription drug advertising can have, almost all industrialized countries have banned such advertisements, excluding The United States and New Zealand.
Other Senators co-sponsoring the bill include Dick Durbin, Chuck Grassley, and Tommy Tuberville, amongst many others.
