A temporary pause on federal funding for projects was going to affect Manitowoc.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this week to freeze federal grants and loans which left communities confused and unsure what it means for them.
Mayor Justin Nickels tells Seehafernews.com that federal funding given to the city for the Mirro Property project will be safe.
“We were awarded that back in May,” he said. “The council actually approved the winning bid prior to President Trump’s executive order, so, it’s already a project in the works.”
Nickels says from what’s understood at the time, the pause is for dollars that aren’t committed to projects.
Nickels says the city was planning on applying for a large sum of money to help get more work done in the River Point District.
Nickels told SeehaferNews.com, “The northwest side of that property, especially with the sheet wall that’s going to be needed and the dredging of the river there with potential contamination from WTS back in the day.”
Nickels also says money for projects from the federal bipartisan infrastructure law is sticking around, which means a road project on South 30th Street will still be done.
The Trump White House announced yesterday that they’ve rescinded the order after the confusion.
