Four local youth hockey teams are gearing up for their runs to a state title.
Manitowoc County Youth Hockey’s 10U Squirt B squad will be making their way to Hayward this weekend for their state tournament, in which they were given the 5 seed.
We met with Coach Joshua Sanders and several players shortly after the Breakers dominated their way through the playdowns, beating Shawano 8-0 and Waupaca 9-0.
Sanders said he was very proud of how his team performed.
He noted that it was awesome to “see all the hard work and stuff they put in all season long and sticking to the basic fundamentals. And for them to put a forward and be able to go out there and put eight and nine points on the board and be able to come away with a shutout was just awesome. It was mind blowing.”
Hero Dvorak told us he scored two or three goals in the playdowns, but has really improved his passing ability this season.
Mollie Sanders also had a blast, but said the one part sticks out the most was “Scoring my third goal of the season.”
Luke Malmanger, on the other hand, was the lead scorer for the Breakers, netting six goals.
He told us he is very excited to play in the state tournament.
As for Logan Cheske, this will be his first state tournament, and he predicted that they were going to win the whole thing.
Coach Sanders reiterated “I want every one of my Breakers kids to know from Squirt B that I am absolutely proud of everything that they have accomplished this season and all of the hard work that they put in and just continuing to be the best hockey players that they can.”
The Breakers’ Squirt B team will face off against Sauk Prairie at 12:15 Saturday afternoon (March 1st).
If they win, the Breakers will play at 5:45 Saturday evening for a trip to the championship round.
If they lose, the squad will play at 4:30 p.m.
Either way, they will face either Somerset Black or Hayward.
The championship game is scheduled for 1:30 Sunday, wrapping up the guaranteed three-game weekend.
