The Manitowoc County Youth Hockey Association is gearing up to host the 12U Peewee 4A state tournament next weekend.
As per the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association rules, that means the Breakers squad received a free pass to the tournament, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t earn it.
As a matter of fact, the Breakers were given the #2 seed, the highest of any of the four local squads competing for a title.
Coach Ryan Kalsich tells SeehaferNews.com that his team is very excited to host the tournament the weekend of March 8th.
“[It is] an honor to have our family and friends come home and watch us play,” he said. “I think protecting our barn is a cool thing…and, I mean, it’s just great to have it at our house because friends, family come to the important games. And this is one of the big ones.”
Center Nick Hyde, who has played in five state tournaments, admitted that, while the season has gone quite well for them, there is always room for improvement, specifically, “…on all the small things.”
Mason Scarvan tells us he has enjoyed the season, especially, “Working hard with the team. We all came together and [are] playing great.”
Trevor Pinkerton says he enjoys playing as a defenseman due to the physical nature of the position.
“You get to block all the shots and you get to push the kids and get physical in front of the net,” he explained.
The Breakers Peewee A squad has an early start to the tournament, as they will kick off the weekend with an 8:00 a.m. matchup with Viroqua on Saturday, March 8th.
They will then face either Barron/Chetek or Marinette-Menominee in the winners bracket at 3:30 p.m. or in the consolation bracket at 2:00 p.m.
Champions will be crowned at the Manitowoc County Ice Center at 1:15 p.m. on March 9th.
