The next head coach of the Manitowoc Lincoln Tennis team has been announced.
The Manitowoc Public School District says Jay Conrad, a protégé of Legendary Former Head Coach Bob Feller, will take the helm, using experience he gleaned from Feller himself.
Feller announced his retirement after coaching tennis for 50 years last year.
He spoke about his time on the On the Line Podcast.
In retirement, Feller said he will miss being with the kids.
“Being with young people keeps you young,” he stated. “And they are also very, very different. And trying to figure out the big challenge is psychological, just trying to figure out what’s going on in their head. How do I approach this player?”
Conrad served as tennis team co-captain his senior year alongside Aidan Newburg.
The two helped lead the team to second place at sectionals.
After graduating from Lincoln, Conrad served as an assistant coach under Feller and Jim Newberg for the past three seasons.
Conrad explained, “As a coach, I believe that the best way to measure success is not by raw results but by the growth of players as both athletes and people. Last season, I saw progression from every player on the team, from our 1 doubles team that was seeded third at state, down to our 4 doubles team that started the year barely able to win a point.”
The announcement from MPSD says Conrad looks forward to mentoring future players to achieve their personal and team goals.
While at Lincoln, he completed internships in the banking industry in information technology and marketing.
