The WAHA 12U 4A Pee Wee state tournament kicked off with a heartbreaker.
The host Manitowoc Breakers opened up the tournament with a matchup against Viroqua, which went into overtime.
With 3 minutes left in the extra frame, a seeing eye shot from the top of the slot hit the top left corner of the net, beating Manitowoc Goalie Zander Renard and giving Viroqua the 4-3 win.
The matchup started with a stalemate, neither team netting a goal in the first period, but it was a different story in the second.
The Breakers scored twice within two minutes, but Viroqua would respond a few minutes later.
Each team would add one more in the period, and were kept scoreless in the 3rd. The Breakers controlled the offensive zone, peppering the net with 50 shots while allowing only 15, but it wasn’t enough.
The local squad got goals off the sticks of Trevor Pinkerton, Oliver Schwartz, and Nick Hyde, while Reese Kalcich, Mason Skarvan, and Finn Erickson recorded assists.
The loss moves Manitowoc into the consolation bracket, where they will play either Barron/Chetek or Marinette-Menominee at 2:00 p.m.
