Wisconsin Committee of Education Democrats, Including a Sheboygan representative, have responded to layoffs at the Department of Education.
Representative Joe Sheehan of Sheboygan joined Representatives Francesca Hong, Angelina Cruz, and Christian Phelps who strongly opposed the department cutting more than 1,300 employees.
These layoffs come after President Donald Trump signed an executive order threatening to dissolve the department.
Rep Sheehan said, “The Department of Education was predicated on the commitment to assure access to equal educational opportunity for every individual in the nation. To reduce the scope of this commitment is to harm the future of every student who enters into the care of our public schools.”
Before being elected to represent the City of Sheboygan, Sheehan spent the majority of his adult life in the world of education, so these cuts hit close to the first term representative.
According to the group’s joint statement, these cuts have already resulted in the termination of numerous contracts in the department, including “gutting of the Institute of Education Sciences.”
