Another fire that began as a controlled burn quickly got out of control in Fond du Lac County.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call on Saturday (March 15th) just before 11:45 a.m. from a property owner on County Highway CCC in the Town of Marshfield.
The caller stated that a previously “controlled” burn spread and was now covering roughly one acre of marshland. Heavy winds caused the fire to spread quickly.
Responding firefighters from more than 10 agencies worked to prevent the flames from spreading to surrounding tree lines, containing the fire to only the marshland.
Initial investigation found that residents at the Highway CCC home were burning garbage in a burning barrel earlier in the day.
They believed the fire had been fully extinguished, however, that was not the case, and the fire spread to the nearby marsh, consuming roughly five acres of land.
As we recently reported, this is the second controlled burn to escalate in Fond du Lac County in less than a week.
Authorities in Fond du Lac County, along with the WI DNR, advise anyone burning material of any kind to check the state burn restriction webpage before doing so.
Responding Fire personnel included the Mt. Calvary Fire Department, St Cloud Fire Department, Calumet Fire Department, St. Anna Fire Department, Kiel Fire & Rescue, Elkhart Lake Fire Department, Plymouth Fire Department, Greenbush Fire Department, New Holstein Fire Department, Campbellsport Fire Department, and Glenbeulah Fire Department.
