The first part of the redevelopment of the former Mid-Cities and Lakeshore Mall properties in Manitowoc has been approved.
The Manitowoc Common Council approved accepting a preliminary subdivision plot for 41 single-family and two-family homes located where the Younkers building used to be.
The council then approved an ordinance amending the zone map of the area before accepting a resolution for the land, which will be called the Mariner Lux Subdivision.
Alderman Chad Beeman, whose district encompasses the former mall site, says he hasn’t heard much from constituents about the redevelopment but is happy to see what’s happening.
“I remember being a child going there to see Santa and stuff so, ever since the mall’s closed, it’s been an eyesore as we all know,” he explained. “Even if I wasn’t District 2 alderman, I’d be very happy for this move.”
That goes as well for Council President Bill Schlei, who said, “For now we’re just terribly excited that we’re going to getting after this project and it’s just going to be great for everybody involved in the neighborhood and in the city.”
Schlei tells Seehafernews.com that work is still being done on the other development site for building over 170 apartments.
Tycore Inc. out of Green Bay will be tasked with both projects.
The Common Council also approved releasing the easement of the former mall properties, meaning they no longer control what’s happening on the land.
Construction could begin as soon as this year.
