Law enforcement in Sheboygan County is warning residents of yet another scam.
Both the Sheboygan Police Department and the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office have received reports of scammers posing as officers or deputies over the phone.
Scammers are spoofing both department’s phone numbers, making it appear the call is coming from a legitimate source.
However, upon a victim answering, scammers will tell them they have a warrant for their arrest or that they have overdue fines.
In both scenarios, payment will be demanded via gift cards, online banking sites like Venmo, or cryptocurrency.
Both agencies have confirmed that they will never contact residents in such a manner and will never demand obscure forms of payment in any situation.
Residents who receive such a call are urged to simply hang up the phone.
The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office has said that the spoofed numbers used by scammers are unable to be traced, inhibiting their ability to investigate the matter further.
