Fire danger in Northeastern Wisconsin remains high.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources fire danger webpage, Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Calumet, and Brown Counties carry a mark of “high” fire danger.
However, fire danger in neighboring Winnebago and Fond du Lac Counties remains at “very high” meaning the chance of wildfires starting and spreading is at critical levels.
While the DNR is not requiring residents in any of the previously mentioned counties to obtain a burn permit, burning materials of any kind at this time is highly discouraged.
This comes after numerous wildfires have burned hundreds of acres of land in the region over the past week.
On two separate occasions in less than a week, controlled burns in Fond du Lac County quickly got out of hand, claiming numerous acres of marshland and leaving a family home to be considered a total loss.
Yesterday (March 18th) in neighboring Green Lake County, a large-scale wildfire was finally contained after burning approximately 750 acres of both state and private land.
In a statement, the DNR has said, “Spring is wildfire season in Wisconsin. No matter the weather, the DNR urges the public to always check fire danger before conducting outdoor burning activities.”
