A man previously convicted of killing his parents has had his lawyer drop out of the case.
27-year-old Erik Metzig appeared in a Winnebago County courtroom yesterday (March 19th) for a motion hearing where his legal counsel, Timothy Hogan, withdrew from the case citing a conflict of interest.
Yesterday’s hearing was originally scheduled to discuss Metzig’s motion to withdraw his no contest pleas which were first given in 2023.
The 27-year-old had officially filed a motion early last month to rescind his pleas after claiming he was the victim of prolonged sexual abuse at the hands of his parents, and thus the reasoning behind killing Jan and Dave Metzig in March of 2023.
The state responded to Metzig’s request which included documents stating that two inmates housed near Metzig believed the claims of sexual assault were “all garbage” and that the idea came from news coverage of the Menendez case on television.
The Menendez brothers were convicted of killing their parents in California but had claimed they were sexually abused.
However, the topic of a plea withdrawal was not discussed at yesterday’s hearing and has been rescheduled as a status hearing which will take place on May 29th.
