Mary J. Hochkammer, age 97, a Manitowoc resident, passed away Friday, March 14, 2025 at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born February 13, 1928, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to the late Bernard “Ben” and Florence (Leyanna) Hibbard. She attended schools in Manitowoc and graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1946. Mary graduated Magna cum Laude from Holy Family College on July 27, 1962, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Mary earned her Master of Science in Teaching (Elementary Education) from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, August 8, 1969.
Mary married Elmer Hochkammer, and celebrated 46 years of marriage before his passing on February 27, 1993.
Mary loved to travel when she wasn’t teaching or attending classes for her own professional development. She and Elmer traveled with a small trailer, often without a final destination in mind. She described traveling with Elmer “an adventure.” He just drove, with or without their trailer. She never knew where they would end up. They traveled the United States and Canada, seeking nature’s beauty, often in remote areas the average traveler doesn’t pursue. They both enjoyed hiking, swimming, and a roaring campfire at the end of the day. They also loved gardening. They had a large garden and raised some of the best produce in the county. They were happiest in nature.
Mary is survived by her sister: Judy Handl, two nieces, three nephews, and a number of great nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband: Elmer Hochkammer; daughter: Sharon “Sherry” England; brother Leeland “Buddy” Hibbard; sister Lucille Friddle; and sister Delores James.
Cremation has occurred at Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory. In accordance with Mary’s wishes, no services will be held. She will be laid to rest next to Elmer at Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee at a later date.
