The City of Manitowoc is ready to begin filling a new plot of land with manufacturers.
Mayor Justin Nickels announced that the city will now begin targeting manufacturing, technology, and emerging industries to fill the 93.5-acre plot of land on the southwest and east corners of Hecker and Viebahn Streets on the west side of I-43.
The city and Manitowoc Public Utilities worked together to purchase the property from Manitowoc County for $859,000 after opening up discussions in 2018.
The area is covered by a TIF District, which covers the purchase cost and remaining expenditures.
In his announcement, Mayor Nickels noted, “the utility is made whole for the initial purchase, meaning ratepayer dollars were not lost by purchasing the property.”
As for the future of the land, Nickels said, “This past year, I recommended nearly $1.5 million in TIF funding to get the utilities and infrastructure to the site, and the City Council unanimously approved it. Once completed, the site will be shovel-ready for any business that wants to build here.”
