Organizations in Sheboygan are coming together to raise awareness for victims of sexual assault.
Safe Harbor of Sheboygan County and the Sheboygan Police Department have joined forces and are recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
On Tuesday (April 1st) Safe Harbor staff in Sheboygan celebrated Wear Teal Day, aimed at showing support for survivors of sexual violence.
In partnership with Safe Harbor, Sheboygan PD squad cars will display a teal ribbon to acknowledge the courage it takes to come forward when one is a victim of sexual assault.
Teal is a color that represents hope, support, and solidarity with victims.
The police department’s Victim Services division was created and exists to connect, empower, and support victims of not just sexual assault but all crimes in the city.
According to the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault, less than 30 percent of all sexual assaults are reported to the police.
With cooperation between the Sheboygan Police Department and Safe Harbor of Sheboygan County, both groups hope to bring this number up and raise awareness and advocacy for victims of sexual assault.
