Major damage was avoided during a Green Bay house fire, thanks to thermal imaging.
The Green Bay Metro Fire Department was called to the 200 block of South Irwin Avenue Tuesday afternoon (April 1st) on a report of a house fire.
Upon arrival, fire crews observed flames coming from the basement window of a single-family home.
The flames then extended to the home’s exterior; however, the residents and their dog were able to evacuate before firefighters arrived.
Crews began attacking the blaze through the basement windows, but with the home filling up with smoke, they believed the fire was spreading through the walls to the attic.
Thanks to the help of thermal imaging cameras, crews were able to determine how the fire was spreading and where it was burning the hottest.
Utilizing the thermal imaging cameras, the fire inside the walls was extinguished while avoiding extensive damage to the structure and its contents, including a pet lizard, which was also saved.
At this time, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Green Bay Metro Fire Department has thanked the Green Bay Police and Public Works Departments, Wisconsin Public Service, Brown County Public Safety Communications, and the Red Cross for their assistance during the response.
